(From Marston Magna,  Somerset)

Item Code: 01072017/0226 (Foreshore Code)

Description: Polished one side into the stunning marble effect unique to this bed of ammonites, left original on the other side, packed to bursting with the classic Promicroceras ammonites. This item has been expertly prepared on both sides to the highest standard possible. This is a wonderful example of Marstonense, an absolutely stunning display piece. These pieces of Mother Nature’s finest art are really very collectable and will increase in value as less and less is found from this location, and many original collecting sites are not accessible now.

Marston Magna is a small village on the edge of marshland, from which the name is derived, leads to the river Yeo in Somerset. However, to fossil enthusiasts worldwide, Marston Magna is known for being the centre of an ammonite rich seem of Promicroceras and other classic ‘dating’ ammonites in a layer, the iconic Liassic fossil site. The Marston Magna bed was thought lost for many years however a small amount of nodules were found during building work when foundations are dug-out.

This is a layer of once shallow sea where such perfect ammonites lived in vast numbers, a nursery type environment, where they fed on small particles of food that fell to the sea floor. At this size they tend to live in the murk at the bottom of the shallow sea, protected from predators which included larger ammonites. Within the ammonite rich Marstonense matrix are several types of ammonites including Asteroceras, Xipheroceras Xiphus & the most common Promicroceras ammonites (there are others that appear in this matrix but less in quantity).
